Notes from the Piano

The Dutchgrand Came!!

You can't have a Billy Joel Tribute band with out the Piano!

I researched a lot of stage piano shells and Dutchgrand was the best for my requirements - it looks absolutely beautiful and an almost instant setup for a gig.

Dutchgrand the company was great to work with and communicated frequently. Earlier today a FedEx 18 wheeler pulled up to the house and who would have thought that all that truck just had the piano in the back!
I carefully unpacked it and it literally set up in 10 seconds. The cover is an amazing part of the shell - it's like a gig bag for the thing and keeps the shiny side nice and protected.

The keyboard I got is the Yamaha CP88. I picked it because I love the brightness and feel of real Yamaha pianos and this has all the right sounds, and the keys are wooden and have the same action as a real piano - much needed when it comes to playing “Prelude/Angry Young Man” - those keys need to fly.

The keyboard fit in the Dutchgrand with room to spare. I removed the keyboard's center front foot and that let me shift the Yamaha anywhere along the length of the Dutchgrand. Very cool.
Thank you Dutchgrand - we now have the look we need to take to the stage!!

Happy 50th Anniversary Turnstiles!

Billy Joel's fourth album, Turnstiles, came out 50 years ago today, May 19th, 1976! It is my favorite album and the source of the name of the band as well - "I've Loved These Days" is the second to last song on the album.

Turnstiles has some of my all time favorite songs ever - New York State Of Mind, Summer Highland Falls, Prelude/Angry Young Man, and Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out on Broadway). I wanted to get this first band blog out tonight to mark this day and this album. We will be playing all the songs I have mentioned, for sure.

We also got offered our first gig as a band today. Pretty cool.

In this blog we will keep you up to date on the things we are working on musically, and some of the cool things you may or may not know about Mr. Billy Joel, so, keep an eye out!

Do you have a favorite album or song we should play? Please let us know!!
